This lecture considers the following issues.

• An introduction to leases generally, including the benefit of having a lease rather than a licence
• The required characteristics of a lease (exclusive possession and certainty of term) and the exceptional circumstances where there may be no lease despite these characteristics being present
• The acquisition of leases (in law and in equity)
• Implied leases (by entering into possession at a rent) and the circumstances in which they are likely to be relied on
