This lecture considers the subject-matter of the patent system – the inventions that may become the subject of a patent grant. It considers the exclusions and exceptions from patentability set out in the legislation, the meaning of the novelty requirement and the state of the art, the requirement for an inventive step and when an invention is capable of industrial application.
